Yes, that is an action figure of rapper Travis Scott. If you're thinking the action figure is a symbol of nerdy rap and that the debut album will be similar to that of Kid Cudi or Childish Gambino, you are mistaken. Travis Scott grew up in Texas and as a teenager began making beats as he knew it would be really the only way to break into the rap game. Eventually he got the co-sign from mentor Kanye West as you can find Scott sprinkled all throughout Ye's latest offering, Yeezus.
Scott's debut album in short terms, does not live up to the hype. After delaying the album for over a year and naming his last mixtape Days Before Rodeo. It's safe to say people were excited for Rodeo. Scott released two singles while building up for the album, '3500', which features Future & 2 Chainz (both who I am not big on personally) on a track that almost hits 8 minutes.
#1. Completely Unnecessary
#2. Banger tracks should be around 3-4 minutes maximum.
If you're gonna create a track over six minutes long. You have to make that motherfucker beautiful. People today have such a short attention span that it is rare for us to be able to get through a project over 12 tracks in one sitting. If you want to make a song that long, it needs to capture people's attention for the entire length, because if they end up skipping the last 3 minutes, you've failed. You put in more work than necessary when you could have made a shorter song and everyone would have been happy.
The second single he released was 'Antidote'. My personal favorite and big highlight off the album. The track bangs and you will probably become familiar with it playing at nightclubs or any party you go to. That track surprises me because Travis chooses not to have any features on that track while the rest of the album has features from Kanye to The Weeknd to Justin Bieber's (debut rapping performance). I think having as many features as Scott does on his debut project is a lame move. As soon as you read the tracklist to the album it immediately becomes less about the music. Sure, you could have an artist on there that you're eager for a verse or hook from. But you aren't buying their song. You're buying an artist's first ever project. Why not save the features for later? If it's your first ever project as an artist shouldn't the album be speaking about the music rather than all the famous people you know and how rich you must be to get them all on your album? An artist's first project should be about them, who they are, their specific sound and such. I feel like Travis just wanted to make a banger hip-hop album and tried to please everyone with the features and singles when if he is the hip-hop head he truly is supposed to be (making beats at 16 in desperation to become peers with his idols) he should be making an album that speaks his sound rather than his worth.
That being said, I did enjoy parts of the album, but only the tracks that bang (except for Apple Pie, the piano track on that fucking kills). The album is not worth a full listen because you'll end up with songs like 'Piss On Your Grave' which should be a good song because it features Kanye but it's actually atrocious and sounds like it was made in one session. And if you get the Deluxe edition, you'll get the Schoolboy Q-assisted 'Ok Alright' which is basically Schoolboy squealing "Okay Okay" for 7 minutes straight. Not good.
If you're gonna check out this album, check out the highlights: 'Antidote', 'Nightcrawler', 'Apple Pie', 'Pray 4 Love', 'Maria I'm Drunk' and the first half of '3500'.
