The scene is summer 2013. Three monster albums drop on the same day, June 18th. One of them being Mac Miller's Watching Movies With The Sound Off. That was my favorite album that summer. Since that release, Mac has laid concerningly low. He released a mixtape titled Faces on mother's day in 2014 but that was all we got. When suddenly, out of the blue Mac graced us with his precence in July promising his new album was finished. Now, we have a new Mac Miller album. Titled GO:OD AM, the project dropped on September 18th. The only thing is, this isn't the same Mac Miller.
Opening with a luscious organization of strings and layers of production courtesy of Tyler, The Creator on the track Doors, Mac sings of his newly changed life in that "Ain't saying that i'm sober, I'm just in a better place" before you hear a woman's voice say "good morning baby" as if you have been just woken up by a gorgeous model whispering in your ear. All this before the alarm clock goes off and you are brought into the first track of the album, Brand Name, with a surprisingly warm tone set off immediately by the soulful production that ID Labs created for us. It is a perfect song to wake up to, it gets you moving with the mentality that today is going to be a good day.
Throughout the album, Mac has a little bit of everything to offer, as we all know from personal experiences. Everyday is a little different and can offer a different sort of emotional experience for yourself. Whether someone says you have a stain on your shirt or the new pair of shoes you bought look stupid. That kind of stuff could mess up the rest of your day. Or if you ask your crush out and she says yes you could be riding euphorically through the rest of the day. It is unpredictable what each day will hold for you as we all go through the emotional roller coaster that is life. And Mac tries to capture that with a different mood on every song. Whether it be the heartfelt ROS to the banger that is When in Rome to the confessional Perfect Circle / God Speed. This 23-year-old emcee has gone from rapping about Diamonds & Gold and Parties on Fifth Avenue to finding his own voice and really making a creatively impressive album. This should come as no surprise as he put 2.5 years worth of work into this album and made nine different albums before settling on GO:OD A.M. Mac has created one of my favorite albums of the year and a piece of art that like wine, only gets better with age.
