I have a group of friends that are just as heavily influenced by music as I am. We share so much music together that honestly, i’m not able to get around to all of it. I remember when they recommended the band, Twenty One Pilots to me. Listening to their first album Vessel was like no other and I immediately bought the vinyl and CD of that album. Along with their new album, Blurryface, released on May 17th, 2015. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 making it Twenty One Pilots’s highest charting album. What makes the album so popular? Despite only having maybe two singles you’ve heard on the radio, ‘Stressed Out’ and ‘Tear in My Heart’. The band has a very loyal fan base, known as ‘The Skeleton Clique’, when the album was announced back in march, the skeleton clique crashed the band’s website by frequently trying to order the album. But the fans aren’t the only ones making this album so popular, not only is the word of mouth being spread by the fans catching like wildfire, but there is a good reason for it too.
Twenty One Pilots sing about something literally everyone can relate to. Something more exciting than the millions of songs about heartbreak and rebellion. Anxiety. Everyone in this entire world has anxiety, even the most stuck up girl in your past, present, or future high school sometimes cared about what people thought of her. And that greasy slime ball in the back of your algebra class sure as shit didn’t get up in the morning trying to impress people with how gross he can possibly look. No, everyone dreads not being liked sometimes, and let’s be honest, those voices in the back of your head can get pretty dark sometimes too. You think you’re the only one. Until a band like Twenty One Pilots comes out of fucking nowhere and makes that kind of stuff cool. Makes sentences like “Wish we could turn back time/to the good old days/where the mommas sang us to sleep/but now we’re stressed out” awesome to sing along in the car too with all your friends. Usually, that kind of stuff isn’t that cool to yell at your friends. But welcome to the future friends, anxiety is dope.
Twenty One Pilots isn’t necessarily a band, but a duo. A duo that can be classified as alternative hip-hop, indie, reggae, and pop punk. Songs like ‘Fairly Local’ sound like a total hip-hop banger, and you almost expect someone like Drake to drop a verse halfway through. Other songs like ‘We Don’t Believe What’s On TV’ can easily start a mosh pit, with angsty teenagers yelling back the words “Yeah, Yeah Yeah!” But at the same time, there is no distorted electric guitars, lead singer Tyler Joseph rocks a ukelele throughout the song as drummer Josh Dun keeps up with Joseph’s rapid playing with a steady drum beat and even pulls out a trumpet during the chorus. Which is an excellent change up. A song like ‘Lane Boy’ was basically made for the club and live performances for people to go apeshit crazy too. And I can almost promise you that your girlfriend will like ‘Tear In My Heart’ so there’s a little bit of everything on the record.
There are monstrous superstars like Katy Perry and Justin Bieber with millions of followers on social media. But it’s the bands like Twenty One Pilots with diehard fans that spread the good word of music. Tyler Joseph built this band from nothing in the late 00’s and to this day it only consists of two main members. They are one of the most exciting bands i’ve heard in years and they have a bright future to come. If you have not heard this band yet, you are missing out. And don’t just go for the songs on the radio. Buy the album like a good citizen and fully indulge the word of Tyler Joseph and know that you aren’t alone when you ‘are insecure and care what people think’
